Only a Sofer ( Authorised Scribe ) can write a parchment for a Torah, Mezuza or Tefilin.
There is a direct tradition of how each letter and word on the Klaf (parchment) should be written exactly.
(The scroll is written with 713 letters in 22 lines from the Shema, the scribe must follow 4,649 laws that govern its writing! )
Like a Torah scroll it is on parchment made from the skin of a kosher animal. On this handwritten scroll are two portions of Torah: "Shema" and Vehaya, including the verse, "And you shal inscribe them (the words of God) upon the door posts of your house and upon your gate." (Devarim 6:9.)
Appearing on its reverse side is the word "Shadai", one of the Names of God and an acronym for shomer dlatot Israel - "protector of the doors of Israel."
The parchment / scroll is placed in a mezuza case and affixed on the upper right doorpost of all gates, houses and rooms.
